Bully & Violence Prevention

Bully Prevention Curriculum One Up Handout _Front Side Page 1_

Kindergarten:

Identify situations that cause students to feel angry. Learn healthy & unhealthy ways to express anger. Discuss angry feelings regarding bullying situations. Gain skills to deal with anger & bullying. Identify adults to go to for support.

1st Grade:  Conflict Resolution

Discuss how bullying can occur when situations seem "unfair." Identify rules at school to help feel supported & safe. Discuss
ways to express feelings when upset. Role‐play situations to confront and resolve conflict. Identify adults for continued
support.

2nd Grade:  Introduction to Bully Behavior

Recognize/define bullying behavior. Discuss the impact of bullying on emotions, feelings & self‐esteem. Develop skills to respond to conflict. Identify how to safely report danger/bullying to adults.

3rd Grade:  Dealing with Bullies

Understand why bullies bully. Gain non‐aggressive techniques to tell a bully to stop. Increase communication skills using "I"
statements. Practice skills to respond effectively with the use of role‐play. Discuss why students may not report bullying. Gain awareness of how to report bullying safely. Identify counselor & other adults for support

4th Grade:  Bystanders to Bullying

Define bully, target, & bystander and roles each play. Consider that ignoring, laughing or joining‐in is participating in bullying. Learn bystanders play a key role in preventing bullying. Develop skills & strategies to stop bullies & help targets. Gain awareness of the positive affect groups have to confront a bully. Identify ways to feel comfortable seeking help from
adults

5th Grade: Group Dynamics to Bullying

Identify how groups can be inclusive or exclusive (cliques). Discuss methods bullies/groups use to harass other students. Learn a 3-step plan to deal with bullies/cliques. Practice skills to respond to bullying with the use of role-play. Discuss helpful methods of including adults for support.

6th Grade: Cyber Bullying and Internet Safety

Defines cyberbullying and ways it occurs; students will gain an understanding of why the internet must be used in ways that are legal and that are respectful of self and others; students will gain an awareness of the harm that can be inflicted through internet bullying and will be able to identify techniques to advocate for themselves; students will learn techniques of responding if they become victims of an internet bully; students will be able to list personal safety techniques they should adopt for internet use. Define & discuss the consequences (and laws) regarding "Sexting." Increase skills to use the Internet safely. Gain awareness between inappropriate/appropriate use of the Internet & self-esteem. Identify methods of support from on-line resources and other sources/adults.

7th Grade: Teen Dating Violence

Discuss Teen Dating Violence. Learn how to recognize the subtleties of negative peer pressure. Define physical, emotional, sexual or financial intimidation that one person in an intimate relationship uses in order to control the other person, and gain skills and effective strategies to avoid Teen Dating Violence. Identify people to refer to for support regarding abusive situations.

This lesson is based on the Safe Dates Curriculum recommended by the Indiana Department of Education in response to Heathers Law.

Learn the definition of Sexual Harassment. Understand that Sexual Harassment is a form of bullying. Gain skills to identify situations/examples of Sexual Harassment. Review the school policy used to protect students & employees. Identify the school procedures to use if Sexual Harassment occurs. Gain an appreciation of the right for schools & students to create a safeenvironment. Identify specific support systems available in and out of school.
